HBA members partner with Habitat For Humanity to build home in Joplin
JOPLIN,
MO - The Home Builders Association of Southwest Missouri and Habitat
for Humanity of Joplin Tuesday broke ground in a partnership to
build a home for a local family. HBA member builders will provide
project management, while associate members will provide volunteer
labor to complete the home. A significant amount of material and
supplies have been donated by HBA members and Habitat will provide
any additional materials on behalf of the family they have qualified
for their program.
"The
National Association of Home Builders has a strong relationship
with Habitat for Humanity International," said Jerry Hickenbottom,
HBA President. "We wanted to step up and do our part for the
local Habitat group and they were very receptive to our involvement.
If we can help move even one family closer to owning their own home,
then we've accomplished the most important mission of the HBA. Our
goal is to provide quality, affordable housing to families in all
income brackets."
Gary
Philpot, Co-Chair for the project said "We've wanted to be
involved with Habitat in a more significant way for some time now.
We provided some volunteer labor for a couple of the Habitat homes
several years ago, but the HBA Board was anxious to get involved
in a more substantial way."
"Member support for the project was unbelievable," said
Kerry Rose, Co-Chair for the project. "As soon as our associate
members heard we were considering doing this project, the phone
started to ring with donations of labor and materials. We're proud
to have such a strong sense of community involvement in our members."
The
Habitat project has been divided into seven phases, with a different
contractor being responsible for each phase of the project. That
contractor is responsible for coordinating the work effort and keeping
the project on schedule. As he finishes his phase it is passed to
the next contractor.
The home will be finished by October 1st and will be featured on
the HBA's Parade of Homes starting October 11th. |
